Best Acoustic Bass Guitar

April 6, 2012
Pickings are slim in the acoustic bass guitar market. Just a few years ago, there were plenty that actually functioned as acoustic instruments. Nowadays, they're mostly concert-size guitars with bass necks attached. Bass guitars have been around for at least 100 years, but started out as a sort of stand-up bass with frets. Ernie Ball re-introduced the concept in 1972 with the Earthwood bass, an acoustic bass guitar that was strictly acoustic. They're long gone, but, at least for a while, Guild, Tacoma, Taylor and a handful of boutique builders were filling the gap. Why it's best: Hand made in Japan from all solid tone woods, the Takamine TB250SC is one of the finest production acoustic bass guitars made. Why it's a best pick: Boulder Creek has revolutionized acoustic guitar design by combining solid tone woods with their patented Suspended Bracing System (SBS), which allows the top to vibrate more freely, thereby improving projection. In short, the EBR3 has the most bang for the buck of any acoustic bass I've ever seen.... Read Full Review

Why it's a best pick: Breedlove's Korean-build Studio BJ350 is now their top-of-the-line bass. Along with its deep jumbo body, solid spruce top and Baggs pickup system is the JLD Bridge Truss, a small wooden brace that increases bass response and sustain. Breedlove puts the same care and quality into their economically-priced imports as they do with their high-end domestic instruments.... Read Full Review

Why it's a best pick: Designed by renowned builder Paul Beard, the Gold Tone PBB Resonator Bass is loud, compact and assembled in the US. It features a humbucking pickup with tone and volume, enabling it to pull double duty as an electric bass. The sound is fat and punchy, even before you plug it in.... Read Full Review

Why it's a best pick: Michael Kelly's Club Custom has a solid cedar top with laminate ash back and sides for improved projection and presence. The electronics are made exclusively for this bass by Fishman, one of the most respected manufacturers of acoustic pickups. A fantastic buy for $500!... Read Full Review
