Best AGP Video Card

(July 08, 2009)

While the AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) slot has long since been surpassed by PCI Express in terms of graphics buses, some people still have older computers that have AGP as their main graphics card bus. Although PCI Express components and parts are becoming increasingly cheaper, AGP cards have not followed the trend of their PCI Express sister cards in prices due to their lesser supply level. This list will detail AGP graphics cards that are generally good upgrades from integrated graphics or weaker discrete graphics cards. All this without costing so much that simply buying a PCI Express system becomes more prudent.

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 3850 AGP Video Card

Why it's best:
AMD has been the only manufacturer to still support the AGP bus with modern GPUs to some extent. While the PCIe version of the HD3850 has long since been surpassed by AMD's 4-series GPUs, this is the best that can be had for a reasonable price in terms of the AGP bus. Why it's a best pick:
The only 4-series AMD graphics card on the AGP bus, the 4650 makes up for the shortfall in sheer bandwidth with its GDDR3 memory, despite only having a 128-bit memory bus. Though it probably wouldn't be the best card for the higher resolutions such as 1920x1200 or 2650x1600.... read full review

Why it's a best pick:
The Asus HD 3650 is a midrange 3-series GPU that is passively cooled for those who want silent operation from their AGP video card. While the 3650 GPU may not be the most powerful to drive the most modern games, the HD 3650 fills a good niche for those seeking to upgrade the... read full review

Why it's a best pick:
The GeForce 7000 series was a direct competitor to the ATI X1000 series of cards back in 2006-2007. Since then, these cards have been eclipsed by three generations of newer cards. In the AGP front, where development is much slower due to the near-elimination of the AGP bus, ... read full review

Why it's a best pick:
While ATI's old 2000-series GPUs have been relatively lackluster compared to Nvidia's enormity with their 8000-series GPUs, the HD2600 is generally well-regarded as a good midrange video card. This factor carries over to its AGP variant. Again, AGP cards do not enjoy the sam... read full review
