Printers have evolved quite a bit in a short period of time. Inkjet printers used to be the low cost and quality solution to the more sophisticated laser printer option, but that's not the case anymore. Both types of printers can print quality pages, it just depends on what kind of printing you want to do. The difference between inkjet and laser is how the ink is applied and adheres to your page. Inkjets spray millions of tiny picoliter size dots onto the page, creating a vast color palette in the image. But there’s the risk the finished product might show slight bleed or a subtle pixelated effect if the printer is a low quality machine. Laser printers use toner, a powdered ink that heats ink to the page to produce an image. Unlike ink, toner doesn't have the risk of wet smudging, but you lose some of the color palette as toner lays down one color at a time and toner ink isn't as deep or thick as regular ink. Text documents and monochrome graphics look great with laser, but if you're looking to print lab-quality photos, ink presents a better color palette and deeper, richer photographic images.

There’s a wide spectrum of printers suitable for every budget. Some have limited paper capacities for smaller jobs, making them better for home or personal use. Larger paper capacities are better for office environments, so you're not constantly replacing paper. Extra features like auto document feeders and duplex printing make large and complicated jobs easier to do as the machine does much of the work for you.

One of the more resourceful and popular options at the moment is the "all-in-one" printer. These printers are capable of not only printing, but scanning, faxing and copying. These machines are one of the best options because they can do so many things in one easy-to-use unit. Plus, many of them offer the highest quality printed, scanned, and copied pages, with resolution of up to 9600 x 2400 dpi (dots per inch) for color prints.

Wireless printers is a hot commodity now too. Printers can now print documents and photos directly from mobile devices and web-based cloud services. Many of them can also accept USB drives and memory cards to download your material directly to the printer's hard drive, eliminating the need for a PC or laptop altogether. Office environments may want a printer that multiple employees can use along a shared network and there are quite a few that offer this type of connectivity.

Lastly, when choosing a printer, consider print speeds. Print speeds not only refers to the time it takes for a printer to finish printing a document (rated at pages per minute or ppm), but also to something called "first print out". This clocks the amount of time it takes for a printer to receive and process data from a printing source to when it starts the print job. Beware of the advertised print speeds from many manufacturers, however, they're not all accurate. Some manufacturers claim faster speeds but neglect to mention those are only attained at lower quality output, when the speed for high resolution prints is considerably slower.

Best Home All-In-One Printer:

If you need a printer, scanner, copier, and fax, the most practical solution is to go with an all-in-one (AIO) printer. Not only will it save you money, but desk space as well. Many of the newer models feature both Wired and Wireless connectivity, allowing you to share the printer with others in your home or office. We’ve selected the best overall all-in-one printers based on output quality, print speed, features, and price.

Productivity is the root of any business, so it's important to have an office printer that functions efficiently. All-in-one printers are the best fit for smaller offices, since they are versatile enough to handle most needs.

Many offer WiFi connectivity to multiple users who can utilize the machine without a network. This connectivity simply lets you communicate with the printer directly, often times allowing you to simply email your content or physically tap a mobile device to the printer.

Laser printing used to be the preferred method for office environments, but that thinking has started to change as inkjets are being designed for higher duty cycles while using less consumables, through duplex printing and economical monthly usage. The fact of the matter is, these days, laser and inkjet can both keep up with the demands of a productive office, it all depends on what those demands are in your particular environment.

                                                    Best Office Laser Printer:

Office laser printers are meant to withstand constant use and expected to produce high-quality output in both monochrome and color. Laser printers use toner instead of traditional inks which can get quite costly depending upon how much you use it. Now, that's not say the toner is cheap either but it can be more cost effective in the long run, especially in office environments.

Based on the size of your office, you may not need a large printer capable of heavy duty cycles or fancy features. Some small businesses and home office use printers can be smaller in size and offer less paper handling capabilities. Heavy traffic environments may need something to accommodate multiple users along a shared network and produce various size prints. Whichever you need, you'll find the whole spectrum of choices on our list, each one making our list based upon criteria including their ease of use, functionality, print speed and quality, added features, and price.

However, you won't find duplex printing here and the paper tray doesn't hold a lot either. Read Full Review

This defines the amount of time it takes for the printer to receive information and begin production and delivery of the first page of a job.

Laser printers are predominantly monochrome units, producing text documents and some graphics work such as spreadsheets, charts, and graphs among others. These printers are well suited for home and office environments and most of them have wireless connectivity for PC's, Mac's, mobile devices, and digital cameras. Many of them will also allow for memory cards and USB flash drives for printing of documents as well.

You also don't need to spend a whole lot for a good laser printer as we've identified five of them that are under $100. Beyond the price tag, you generally want to find solid machines that are reliable and provide great performance.

We looked at how quickly these different models can print text and pictures, referred to as images per minute (IPM) and the resolutions available on them. These are all inkjet models and if you're interested in printing color photos, then you should definitely look at their resolutions for these printers, rated in dots per inch (DPI).

These particular models were chosen for this list because they offer a wide range of options for use, most of them are multi-function machines, and allow you to zoom in and adjust images when copying or printing. These printers are also easy to use, with digital displays featuring simple menu navigation and offer WiFi connectivity to services like AirPrint and Google Cloud printing.

Canon PIXMA MX922 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax

Portable printers offer more convenience and functionality than standard printers for the simple reason that most of them are designed to print photographs. These units are often geared for individuals such as travelers who take a lot of vacation photos, professional photographers who need hard copies of their work, or even professional football teams who need to analyze photographs of plays on the field during a game.

Most of these printers produce lab-quality photographs that you'd expect from a processing center, with long-lasting inks capable of reproducing millions of brilliant colors and dramatic monochromatic contrasts. Not all of these printers produce photos exclusively; some of them are work-horse document printers capable of handling large jobs in remote locations.

Wireless connectivity is an important component of a portable printer by offering print capability with PC's and Mac's through Wi-Fi and Ethernet networks, while mobile devices and digital cameras can print directly through mobile print apps. Most of these printers can even accommodate memory cards and USB flash drives which can be plugged directly into the unit.

Check out our list of the best portable printers on the market at the moment, each chosen based upon the following criteria including their portability, print speed, print quality, connectivity options, extra features, ease of setup and use, and price.
