Best Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

April 15, 2013
Bottom-mount refrigerators are the least purchased of the models found on this list. Most people don't even really consider their existence. They're so often confused with french-door that they have mostly disappeared in peoples minds. The difference between the two can be found in the door that connects to the fridge. On french-door models, there are two doors that open, similar to the french window design. Bottom-Mounts simply have one door, and often a lot of savings compared to their double door partners. Some great deals can be found in the world of bottom-mounts, and often in as good and better quality than the french-door.

Best Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Overall:

Bottom freezer models are actually quite different from French door designed refrigerators. Looking around the web, you wouldn't believe it as the two are categorized as one or both. But as an appliance reviewer, and as a fan of the bottom freezer style, I've always tried to make the difference known. French doors have two doors, while bottom freezers have just one, larger door.

It may sound simple, but it means the world of difference in build, quality and design. One large door creates a much cleaner surface, and many people prefer the less cluttered design as compared to a French door model. The following list is composed of the best bottom freezer models, as determined by capacity, design, quality and price.

Best High End Bottom Freezer Refrigerator:

High-end bottom freezer refrigerators are actually pretty affordable when compared to some of their French door counterparts. Thankfully, French door has stolen the spotlight for the last five years or so, leaving the bottom freezer refrigerators (even the high-end models) to be more reasonably priced. in my opinion, the bottom freezer models are much better looking. They combine tons of space, excellent features and top it all off with a very clean look from edge to edge. French door equivalents tend to be cluttered with handles and multiple openings, but little matches the full modern class of a bottom freezer.

Best Budget Bottom Freezer Refrigerator:

The truth is, budget bottom freezer refrigerators are a hard item to get your hands on. Bottom freezer refrigerators are already a hard-to-find model, sandwiched in between the extremely popular French door models and the budget friendly top freezer models. That limited popularity leads to less models being purchased, making it harder to find good deals.

However, while it may be hard, it's not impossible to find a good deal on a budget bottom freezer refrigerator. I have sought out and found some of the best, all with the requirement that they come in under $1,000. Well rated, my top five models all have good capacity, capabilities and quality.

IG? They have an achiles heel! I have an LG 2 door, sure not the same model as evaluated here, BUT,LG. My LG is the 2 door SXS fridge/freezer. It's big, it's beautiful but it failed twice in 2 years! It worked for 10 months then the temperature probe failed. It was still on guarantee/warranty so I got a new freebie probe plus free labour, lost some food though.... Read More New sensor lasted one year. As it's now out of guarantee/warranty, I paid-up for the new sensor. It took 1 week for LG to reach us, weekend, public holiday, busy etc. but that's NOT the point, The point is one expects a fridge to last 15, 20 or more years, as all neighbours and our previous models did. Sensor is a simple component, BUT it is the 'go/no go' item for the fridge. If the circuit in the small, single, thermo-whatever component of the sensor opens, that signal shuts off the fridge. The tech. didn't know why it would fail/open circuit, nor its name! These sensors are made in Thailand, not by LG, and come from a 'supplier' according to tech. The new sensor looks identical to the first one, so it may be that LG is accepting these failure-prone sensors without changing/upgrading etc. That would be 1 sensor a year, or less if one is unlucky,. It's only guaranteed for 3 months. LG seemed to have plenty of sensors in store! Maybe I'll scour the net for sensors and keep one spare to fit myself now I've seen it done twice. Maybe LG will send me a new sensor for spare? I will never buy an LG fridge again. You wanna buy an LG fridge? Go for it, but don't forget I warned you.. Minimize

Love the down freezer I had before so I want a new one in that style. Are the current "In French doors" the way to go. Does anyone see a disadvantage to them. Side by side gives you two little freezer space I hear. I am older now and not having to bend down sounds great. But what about French doors. Get them or not? Thanks

I bought a GE bottom freezer fridge and am only puzzled as to why there hasn't been a class action law suit about these shoddy products being thrown out there. I will never buy another Sears product as long as I live because their customer service (India) and repairpeople (local) were so incapable of resolution to the problem The repairmen were here time... Read More and time again, they would cancel appointments, show up late, w/o parts and were generally incapable of resolving the problem. My husband has to on a monthly basis take the casing apart, and blow dry the fan or we lose cold air and food. SEARS REFUSED TO REPLACE IT UNDER THE LEMON LAW BECAUSE WE DID NOT MAKE THEIR REPAIR PERSON A BONAFIDE MEMBER OF THE FAMILY. Seriously they had people here at least half a dozen times and that was after cancellations and no shows as well. Every Friday for a period of months we had one guy whose name actually was Ken Moore. I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP. All we wanted was a replacement refrigerator. Until I have some reasonable assurance that I am not replacing this piece of junk with another... I am holding off buying and am using the blow dryer every few weeks. Crazy but true. I have purchased numerous products including a washer dryer and stereo and email Sears everytime I do to let them know they lost me as a customer for life.
Whether or not to buy extended warantee is another dilemma. They soak the public pretty well
for such inferior customer disservice. My twenty five year old clunker in the garage looks funky but works fine! Obama can set the entire economy straight I think if he could get Americans back to making appliances that actually work. Minimize

Magnets will not adhere to stainless steel surfaces. That is actually one way to tell if the coating is stainless steel or just painted to simulate the look. I've see magnets on "titanium" surface LG models.

As for the swing or pull-out drawer, I recommend the pull-out as with a swing door you will need to kneel in order to see what's in the rear of the freezer.

I'm looking at an LG bottom freezer. Am thinking swing door might make viewing of freezer contents easier than a pull-out drawer would.
