Best Buick
The Buick brand is the oldest make sold by General Motors, preceding the company's birth by five years when the latter got its start in 1908 as a holding company for Buick. Down through the years, the Buick brand has succeeded to various degrees in maintaining its position as a premium level brand immediately behind GM's luxury make, Cadillac. As the automaker continues to reinvent itself, Buick is likely to play an important role in the new GM, positioned squarely between Cadillac and Chevrolet, paired with GMC trucks in combined Buick-GMC showrooms.
These days, Buick sells many more times the number of passenger vehicles in China as it does in the US, a distinction that GM says is due in part that it is considered to be a young, vibrant brand there. As for North America, Buick's image is quite a bit more clouded with younger buyers seeing Buicks as “old people's cars” while older buyers are generally happy in getting fairly opulent models without having to pay Cadillac prices for them.
Fortunately, Buick's image is in the process of change, although an extreme makeover would certainly go far to help the brand succeed. Why it's a best pick:
If any Buick can be considered the dowager lady, the Lucerne would fit that bill ably. Named for the aged Swiss city, the Lucerne isn't quite as old as its European namesake but it certainly offers to drivers a reminder of a car from a bygone era.
