Best Cat Food

Article Contents

Cat food manufacturers are constantly inventing new recipes - wet and dry, holistic, natural, grain-free, and organic - nearly all of which claim to be specially formulated to meet your feline's dietary needs.  While any type of ingredients can be combined to produce a product with the appropriate protein level, they are not all the same.  Many veterinarians now recommend canned foods over dry due to their high moisture content which helps compensate for the feline's low thirst drive.  It will be up to you to decide which level of quality you expect from the ingredients.

Natural cat foods are made with ingredients produced by nature (not in a laboratory) and subjected to minimal processing.  These recipes, although indeed natural, may contain meat by-products, grains, soy, or other fillers.

Grain-free cat foods do not necessarily contain high quality meats and may contain other starchy fillers like potatoes or vegetables.  They are merely grain-free.

Holistic recipes believe the inclusion of fruits, vegetables, and other nutrient dense ingredients are the best way to nourish an animal from the inside out.  Some recipes include grains and protein quality may vary as there is no requirement to use natural or organic meats in holistic recipes.

Organic cat foods are made from ingredients grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, added growth hormones, antibiotics, by-products, or bio-engineering.  They can be made from any combination of ingredients (including grains), as long as they are organic.
Whether you decide that price, protein quality, or the mix of ingredients is the most important factor when choosing a cat food, these lists will guide you to the best brands, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of each recipe.

Best Wet Cat Food:

In the wild, cats absorbed the moisture from their prey to stay hydrated and ate little else to stay healthy. Unless you maintain a similar diet for your cat, they may face health issues. Many veterinarians now recommend wet food over dry due to its low carbohydrate content and high concentrations of protein and moisture. The best wet cat foods are produced by companies with high safety standards and contain no grains, byproducts, dyes, or artificial preservatives. They are hormone free or organic and contain no vague ingredients, i.e. chicken meal. The food you feed your cat should be worthy of a health conscious human but designed especially for the feline's flavor palate. Cats are carnivores who seek chicken, beef, duck, tuna, sardines, and other animal proteins to supply their bodies with taurine. Many mammals can produce their own taurine from amino acids within their body, but cats cannot and need it to keep their eyes, heart, and reproductive systems healthy. The average 8 pound cat needs about 250 calories per day with 50 percent or more from protein and 40 percent or less from fat. The canned cat foods on this list were chosen based on how closely they mimic a cat's diet in the wild, price, and the reputation and mission of the brand.

          Best Dry Cat Food:

Although most veterinarians currently recommend canned wet food over dry kibble to compensate for cats' low thirst drive, many cat owners need a more affordable, less regimented feeding schedule. Assuming you can coax your feline into drinking water regularly, dry cat food can be a viable option for meeting both the owner and pet's needs. Cats are carnivores and need a protein packed diet with ample moisture and taurine to mimic their nutrition in the wild. The best dry cat foods on the market contain up to 50 percent protein, 0.2 percent taurine, and a maximum of 10 percent moisture. They are made with meats and fish which are free of antibiotics and hormones, contain no meat bi-products, artificial preservatives, grains or allergenic fillers, and have a low carbohydrate content. The dry cat foods chosen for this list were selected based on how well they meet a feline's dietary requirements, price, and availability. The highest quality cat foods cannot be found at supermarkets, but some are available at chain stores like Petco and PetSmart. Smaller, locally owned pet shops often carry a wider selection of the most nutritious cat food brands, but for the full selection you will have to shop online.

                  Best Kitten Food:

If you skimp on nutrition when selecting kitten food, you may pay the price through higher veterinary bills in the future. Just like humans, cats need quality nutrients to build a strong frame and live a healthy, happy life. Kittens should begin transitioning to dry and canned foods at four weeks and be completely weaned from their mother's milk around eight weeks old. At this stage, due to their increased health and energy needs and high susceptibility to form annoying habits like begging for food, I find it is best to feed kittens a mix of both wet and dry foods. However, you must keep in mind that cats have a low thirst drive and are used to getting their hydration needs met through their food. If your kitten won't drink from a water dish or fountain, you may need to offer more wet food than dry. Kittens need two to three times as much food as an adult cat, primarily from meat. Animal proteins provide the amino acids a feline's body cannot produce on its own, including taurine to maintain healthy vision and coat. Cats need few carbohydrates, whether through grains or starchy vegetables, and can become bloated or endure other digestive issues if fed excessive amounts of low quality carbs. Keep in mind when choosing between flavors that eggs inhibit the feline's ability to absorb biotin (a B vitamin) and fish contains mercury. Recipes with these ingredients should be fed sparingly. The wet and dry kitten foods chosen for this list were selected based on their nutrition content as compared to the standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), price, and shopping convenience.

                        Best Natural Cat Food:

Natural cat foods are made from real ingredients - nothing grown in a laboratory. They have been subjected to minimal processing, but may contain fillers (grains, soy, glutens, and by-products). Shoppers must scrutinize the labels to ensure that the natural cat food they choose contains the proper nutrients. Cats were carnivores in the wild and got most of their hydration needs met through the moisture in their food. The best natural cat foods are canned recipes that are grain free, high in protein (9 percent or more) and moisture content (approximately 78 percent), and contain few fillers (soy, meat by-products, or other). They are also formulated to meet the nutrition requirements of the American Association of Feed Control Officials. The natural cat foods on this list were selected based on their nutrition content, price, availability, and the reputation of the brand.

                                  Best Holistic Cat Food:

Holistic cat foods are formulated to benefit the feline as a whole and utilize a variety of ingredients, each chosen for its ability to enhance the animal's health. Although cats were carnivores in the wild and had little variety in their diets, holistic recipes may include vegetables, fruits, and grains to enhance the flavor and provide a more balanced form of nutrition than felines received in the wild. I believe additional vitamins (fruits and vegetables) never hurt anyone, but that the inclusion of grains or starches is a strategy for decreasing the cost of the product, not increasing its nutrient density. Furthermore, a holistic recipe is not held to any set standard regarding the quality of their ingredients. It is not safe to assume that their meats are hormone and antibiotic free or that their vegetables were grown without the use of pesticides. The ingredients were chosen because the manufacturer believes they work well together and benefit all aspects of a feline's health. The holistic cat foods on this list were chosen based on the quality and balance of ingredients, the reputation of the brand, and whether or not they reflect the nutrition recommendations of the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).

                                          Best Grain-Free Cat Food:

In the wild, cats were carnivores. They received moisture through their meaty diet and ate little else to stay healthy. Felines need taurine (an amino acid) to keep their eyes, heart, and reproductive systems healthy, but unlike other mammals whose bodies are able to produce the protein, cats must obtain it through their diet. Grain-free cat foods vary in quality and may contain alternate carbohydrates (potatoes, peas, etc.), but are generally designed to mimic the carnivore's nutrition needs more closely than other kibbles. The best recipes contain primarily high quality meat, ample moisture to keep your cat hydrated, and no antibiotics, hormones, or by-products. The food you feed your feline should be worthy of a health conscious human but designed for their health needs and flavor palate. The grain-free cat foods on this list were chosen based on the quality and quantity of protein, price, availability, and the recipe's ability to meet the nutrition recommendations of the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).

                                                    Best Organic Cat Food:

Organic cat foods are often seen as the creme of the crop due to the scrutiny applied to products which seek the fancy label, but you must look further than the symbol to determine if the nutrition is worth the cost. Organic cat foods are not readily available at chain pet stores and are often more pricey than holistic, grain free, and natural foods which are much easier to locate on retail shelves. Furthermore, as noted by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), "organic" refers to the way the food was processed not the overall value of its nutrients. The ingredients in organic cat foods are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, added growth hormones, antibiotics, by-products, or bio-engineering. It is up to you to make sure these pristinely grown ingredients fit your little carnivore's needs. Felines thrive on a moist, meaty diet which compensates for their low thirst drive. They need taurine to keep their eyes, heart, and reproductive system healthy, and it must be consumed through the protein in their diet. Look for recipes with minimal carbohydrates to ensure you get the value you deserve.
