Most home kitchens contain a range for their convenience and relative affordability. A range usually combines a cooktop and an oven into one appliance with a wide variety of available styles, features, and capacities. Simple electric ranges can typically be had for affordable prices, while expensive dual-fuel models wouldn’t be out of place in a high-end home. Whether you’re looking for something simple and affordable or something stylish and professional, we’ve compiled the following lists of the best ranges available. For a more detailed guide to finding the best range for your kitchen, be sure to also check out our buying guide below.
Best Freestanding Gas Range:
The variety of choices available when it comes to freestanding gas ranges can be overwhelming, especially when considering the varied needs of each kitchen. While it's impossible to know exactly what will fit your home, these picks are a great starting point, with all coming from trusted brands that are available at most major retailers. These reviews are for the basic functions and features of each model, so it's worth noting that some details might change with specific configurations and color choices. Black surfaces, for example, can be harder to clean, while stainless steel stovetops sometimes scratch easily.
The picks on this list were chosen for their overall performance, as seen in their ability to complete a variety of cooking and baking tasks with consistent results. The following freestanding gas ranges also offer more than just basic features, adding extra convenience thanks to options such as warming zones or drawers, automatic conversion of cooking times for convection cooking, and oven racks designed to slide smoothly and minimize the risk of spills. All of these ranges represent some of the best you can get at a mid-range price, offering a good balance between high quality build and sleek, modern designs.

Best Slide-in Electric Range:
Slide-in ranges (both gas and electric both) provide a more integrated look to your kitchen without the expense of custom built-in appliances. Despite the appearance of appliances, electric ranges generally can't quite match up to the performance of high-end gas ranges. Best Dual Fuel Range:
Gas is said to be better for stovetop cooking due to its superior temperature control and the ability to achieve high, “moist” heat. However, gas ovens need more venting than electrically heat ovens which can contribute to uneven temperatures. Electric is said to be better for baking due to its ability to maintain a more even, dry temperature, and sealing better in the oven compartment. Electric ovens also feature more efficient self-cleaning features.
Though whether all of this really makes a difference in daily cooking is debatable, many people feel that a dual-fuel range offers the best of both worlds. A dual-fuel range configures gas burners with an electric oven as opposed to all-gas or all-electric. Dual-fuel ranges tend to be more expensive, both to buy and to install, as both a gas line and adequate electricity are needed.
The majority of these ranges are slide-in models; while you can find freestanding ranges, we’ve found that the current best crop of dual fuel models are primarily slide-in ranges. We've chosen these units primarily for their overall performance, which has been judged by their ability to effectively meet a variety of cooking and baking needs, from quick meals to a large family dinner.
These best dual-fuel ranges are also built to be very durable, since the typical kitchen range sees very heavy use. We also considered the relative affordability of our selections, although most dual-fuel ranges can hardly be called budget-friendly, we stayed away from using ultra-expensive models. Features and styling tend to vary quite a bit depending on price, although each of the following dual-fuel ranges has a complete feature set of essential features.
This slide-in duel fuel range offers excellent design, features, and performance. This range has a massive 7.1 cubic foot oven capacity, allowing it to easily accommodate even large dishes. Kitchen Range Buying Guide
A range combines a cooktop and an oven into a single appliance. Valued for their convenience and relative affordability, these appliances are divided into two main types: gas and electric. A basic electric range will generally be the most budget-friendly while fancier dual-fuel ranges tend to be quite expensive.
There are a number of things to consider when shopping for a new range. First you’ll want to determine your budget and think about your “must-have” features. Next, ensure the range of your choice has a fuel source compatible with what’s available in your kitchen. You’ll also want to pick a size suitable for your needs; range sizes can vary, with around 30 inches being the standard. Lastly, you’ll want to consider the style and design which agrees with your personal tastes.
Electric ranges refer to ranges where both the oven and the cooktop are electric. These tend to be the most affordable ranges but unfortunately are also the most difficult to keep clean. However, ovens included on electric ranges have a wide variety of options to choose from including convection ovens, a small second oven, or even a warming drawer.
Coil Element Cooktop
Most people are very familiar with this form of cooktop and like their name suggests, they use coil elements to provide heat. By running electricity through a coiled element, it generates heat like the filament in a light bulb. This traditional type of cooktop is simple and affordable, but notorious for providing uneven heat as well as the heating elements never being quite level.
Smooth cooktops are, in their most simple form, essentially a coil element cooktop with a sheet of heat-tempered glass on top. Heat radiates from the coils, through the glass, and to your pots and pans. Thanks to their sleek appearance and convenience, smooth cooktops have overtaken coil elements as the most popular electric option currently available. These cooktops are easy to clean but are prone to scratches and damage.
Fueled by gas, these cooktops are widely considered to be superior to electric models, offering the benefit of sometimes being usable during a power outage. Many chefs prefer a gas flame for easier and more precise temperature control. Heat output is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs), and will vary from one model to another. Unless you have specialized needs, most quality ranges will be more than adequate for your cooking needs.
More expensive gas ranges often have features such as continues grates, a fifth burner, or a “bridge” burner to create a large heating surface. Gas ranges are available with ovens of varying capacities and including many features such as convection capability and warming drawers.
Dual Fuel Ranges
Dual fuel ranges combine a gas cooktop with an electric oven. This combines what many consider to be the best of both worlds, offering the precise control of a gas cooktop and the accuracy of an electric oven.
Most dual fuel ranges are higher-end models which feature professional styling, better materials used in their manufacture, and convenient features which can include the addition of a warming drawer, convection cooking, bread proofing, delay bake, and much more.
This relatively new technology heats the cookware instead of the cooktop itself, making it a safer alternative in the kitchen. Induction cooktops provide rapid heat, precise temperature control, and excellent overall efficiency. However, induction ranges are still quite expensive and they also require specifically compatible cookware to work properly.
Freestanding ranges are very common thanks to their ease of installation. These standalone models are finished on all sides so they don’t need to be surrounded by cabinetry, allowing them to be placed almost anywhere.
Slide-in ranges have unfinished sides, requiring surrounding cabinetry for installation. However, it gives them a more custom look without the need to spend the money for a fully built-in setup. Controls are typically found on the front of the range.
While most ranges have basic features such as a timer and broiler, modern ranges have a seemingly endless list of options to choose from. Don’t buy a range simply because it has the longest list of features. Consider what your typical usage is and start by identifying the features that would be the most beneficial.
Most ranges have features such as delay bake mode and self-cleaning capabilities. If you have children, consider features such as safety locks to keep little hands from accidentally turning on burners or opening a hot oven. Keep an eye out for ranges manufactured with durable materials, rugged racks, grates, along with intuitive features and controls.
Ranges are available in many different styles, varying from very basic-looking models to large, stainless steel options resembling professional ranges in high-end restaurants. Except for some of the most affordable options, most ranges are available in a variety of colors, including the ever-popular stainless steel finish. Consider the styles you like and what works best for the overall look of your kitchen.
