Best Humidifier

Article Contents

Humidifiers are designed to help maintain an optimal humidity level in your home. When looking for a humidifier, take into consideration the size of the humidifier. Will it be large enough for the entire house, will it humidify only one room, or do you need something permanently installed? Where will you use the humidifier, do you need warm- or cool-mist, or ultrasonic humidification? This list of humidifiers include smaller, portable units for single rooms to larger, permanently installed additions to your existing heating system. We’ve also included an informative humidifier buyers guide below which provides detailed information to help you in your search.

Best Cool Mist Humidifier:

Humidifiers have multiple benefits, from easing discomfort due to congestion or dry air, to protecting wood furniture or musical instruments from cracking. Cool mist humidifiers can be divided into two main categories: evaporative humidifiers and ultrasonic humidifiers.

Evaporative cool mist humidifiers use wick filters to disperse moisture into the air and tend to be more effective in larger spaces. While they use very little electricity, they can be prone to germ buildup, and the wick filters should therefore be replaced regularly.

Ultrasonic humidifiers use ultrasonic vibrations to break the water down and disperse it into the air. They are energy-efficient and tend to be the quietest humidifiers around, but are prone to releasing minerals from the water into the air. This creates a "white dust" and while not harmful, it can be a nuisance. This can be managed by installing a demineralization cartridge or by using filtered or distilled water.

Cool mist humidifiers tend to make the air feel a bit cooler, making them well-suited to warmer environments. The best cool mist humidifiers can be either evaporative or ultrasonic models, although regardless of type they must be quiet enough to fade into the background as white noise. They also must be easy to use, with simple controls that require minimal input. Finally, they must be effective at actually adding moisture to the air. We've chosen humidifiers that exemplify all these traits, while including a range of higher-end options to budget-friendly models.

            Best Warm Mist Humidifier:

Warm mist humidifiers work by using a built-in heating element to heat the water in the reservoir to the point of creating steam. Since the humidification is achieved from steam rather than cold mist, warm mist humidifiers can make a room feel slightly warmer than their cool mist counterparts; some find this more soothing and better-suited to colder climates.

Warm mist use a bit more energy on average than cool mist humidifiers, but are still very efficient. They also are usually fairly quiet, with soft gurgling and bubbling sounds coming from the boiling water. Many find these sounds to be soothing, although warm mist humidifiers are usually aren’t as objectively quiet as an ultrasonic cool mist model.

Some also have built-in absorption pads to collect the mineral deposits left behind from the heated water, making cleaning simpler and prolonging the life of the unit.

                                Best Quiet Humidifier:

Although the occasional gurgle of water and some white noise are unavoidable, humidifiers don't need to be excessively loud. If you're planning on using yours overnight, it's important to pick a humidifier that won't disturb sleep. Some of the most quietest humidifiers available are ultrasonic models which naturally produce less noise thanks to their design.

Warm mist humidifiers tend to have more of a water gurgling sound due to the hot water, while cheaper cool mist humidifiers can get quite loud due to the fans. Beyond being extremely quiet, we've picked the best quiet humidifiers that are effective at adding humidity to a room along with ease-of-use with simple controls and safety features such as automatic shut off. Although the price varies, all of the following picks will deliver effective and quiet performance.

                                                    Best Ultrasonic Humidifier:

An ultrasonic humidifier utilizes a metal diaphragm that vibrates at an ultrasonic frequency to create a micro-fine water mist. As the mist mixes with the air in the room, it quickly evaporates to increase the humidity levels. The vibrating metal diaphragm also helps reduce bacteria, germs and mineral dust that is often associated with evaporative cool mist humidifiers. This technology helps these models to operate at much lower noise levels than most other humidifiers.

These units are ideal for use at night, especially for individuals disturbed by anything more than low levels of white noise. Ultrasonic humidifiers are usually cool mist models, but can be purchased with the ability to do both cool and warm mist - although the dual mist options are usually more expensive.

These best ultrasonic humidifiers are able to effectively add humidity to a room, while being exceptionally quiet when in operation. They’re easy to use thanks to simple controls and touches like a built-in carrying handle on the water tank for easier refilling. While the price range of our selections does vary quite widely, each one offers tremendous value from a higher-end dual mist humidifier to a compact travel-friendly model.

                                                            Best Humidifier for Babies:

Many pediatricians recommend placing a humidifier in the nursery when your baby has a stuffy nose and has difficulty breathing. Cool mist humidifies will generally relieve cold symptoms or dryness issues as effectively as a warm mist model, and also tend to be safer around small children in case the humidifier is tipped over. A warm mist humidifier with a medicine cup allows you to add over-the-counter vapor medicines to increase the humidifier’s soothing effects, but for use in a child's room it’s important to choose a model featuring a tip-over safety switch.

All of our picks are well-suited for use in a nursery or child's room, with several also featuring a fun, child-friendly design. These best humidifiers for babies include an automatic shutoff safety feature to ensure the unit isn't left on when tipped over or runs out of water. They’re also quiet enough as to not disturb sleep, while still emitting enough mist to effectively humidify the room. Finally, they are able to run for enough continuous hours to last through the night without needing the water tank refilled.

Furnace humidifiers are called bypass humidifiers because of how a portion of the air leaving the furnace is rerouted to bypass the ventilation system, and is instead run through the humidifier. The air then absorbs moisture, and is routed back into the ventilation system to distribute humidity throughout the house. These humidifiers are excellent to have for winter or dry climates, increasing comfort of the occupants while protecting wood furniture and floors from the damage caused by excessively dry air.

Our picks for best furnace humidifier vary in the size of house they are suited for, but are all capable of reliably maintaining humidity levels in a house up to their rated size. The furnace humidifiers we’ve selected are easy to use, with many featuring the convenience of fully automatic controls thanks to an included outdoor sensor.

Although every humidifier included on this list is relatively painless to install, the choice must be made whether to hook the humidifier to the hot or cold water. Hot water allows for running the humidifier without heat from the furnace, permitting humidity to be dispersed throughout the house much faster, but any wasted water costs you more. Since furnace humidifiers can use quite a bit of water, features such as evaporative water recirculation can improve their efficiency.

Aprilaire Automatic Whole-House Drainless Bypass Humidifier with Digital Control Model 400

A console humidifier is the best choice if you need to humidify your whole living area and want to do it quickly. While some prefer this style of humidifier because of the large water tank and expect to fill it less often, that's not the case and you usually have to fill it daily. Though most have wheels, these units are bulky and can take a fair amount of space near an electrical outlet. They are designed to cover a whole house, but you'll still want to position it where you need it the most, as a home's layout may hinder how well moisture distributes to all the rooms.

Console humidifiers are efficient and add a lot of moisture quickly to a large area, making them the better alternative over using several portable room units. Since whole-house humidifiers use a cool mist evaporative humidifying process, you should expect some operating noise from the fan, although there are models with quieter and/or night settings.

We've selected the best whole house console humidifiers which have simple controls so operation is as easy as pressing one or two buttons, as well as being easy to maintain (or at least not needing maintenance too often). Although the square footage each of the following models is rated for can vary, they’re all capable of adding humidity to a house of 2,000 square feet or more. We've also made sure that these picks are easy to live such as relatively quiet operation, include features such as casters for easy mobility, designed to blend well with their surroundings, and at price points which make them worth the investment.

An included remote control and digital humidistat make this humidifier otherwise easy and convenient to use. Read Full Review

Finding the Best Humidifier: Buyer’s Guide

A good humidifier needs to serve the single purpose adding moisture to the air. Ideal indoor humidity rests between 30 and 50 percent and this level can drop drastically during winter. Reduced humidity can aggravate allergies, cause static electricity buildup, and complicate symptoms such as itchy eyes, sore throat, and dried out skin. Conversely, humidity levels over 55 percent can promote the growth of mold and bacteria. Because of this, humidifiers which consistently and accurately maintain humidity levels within the ideal range are the best to have.

When looking for a humidifier, the first thing to do is identify your needs. Humidifiers are available in very small sizes, being designed for occasional use to add moisture and comfort to the air in a small space. They can also come in large console models to humidify an entire house, or can be installed to work with your furnace. Each type comes with its own purchase price and maintenance cost considerations.

A more expensive humidifier isn't always better. You can get an excellent basic model for a budget-friendly price. However, spending typically yields added features such as a humidistat which allows for setting and monitoring the humidity level within the desired 30 to 50 percent range. Many humidifiers also feature playful, colorful designs and while this doesn't equal less performance, you’ll always want to prioritize substance over style.

Extremely low-cost and basic humidifiers usually work for short-term use, such as relieving the symptoms of a nasty cold. For long term solutions there are numerous options depending on the size of the space where added humidity is needed. For example, individuals in warmer climates might prefer a cool mist humidifier due to their tendency to make the air feel cooler or warmer.

If you have children, you might want to consider spending more on a humidifier that has multiple built-in safety features and even perhaps a playful design. If you have persistent problems with dry air throughout your house, a whole house console humidifier or a furnace humidifier might be worth the investment.

                                                                                          Humidifier Types

                                                                                          Cool Mist Humidifiers
These models use a fan to distribute moist air throughout the room. These humidifiers tend to offer low power consumption and better safety since there's no hot water to cause burns if it’s knocked over. However the fan can produce higher levels of noise.

                                                                                          Warm Mist Humidifiers
Sometimes called vaporizers, these units boil water and emit steam vapor to humidify a space. They’re typically quiet except for the soft bubbling noise of boiling water. These humidifiers come with higher power consumption levels and the risk of burns if a child or pet accidentally knocks one over. The best models will have auto shut-off features for safety in case they run out of water or get knocked on their side.

                                                                                          Dual Mist Humidifiers
These combine the characteristics of warm mist humidifiers and cool mist humidifiers into a single appliance. These units tend to cost more but some people prefer the convenience of having a choice.

                                                                                          Ultrasonic Humidifiers
Typically the quietest humidifiers you can purchase, ultrasonic models utilize a vibrating metal diaphragm to create tiny water droplets making them ideal for bedroom use. Though ultrasonic humidifiers are usually cool mist, higher-end models provide a warm mist option. Although they use very little power, these humidifiers may create “white dust”, a fine powder caused by minerals in water. This can usually be solved by using an optional demineralization cartridge or simply using distilled water.

If you're looking for a more permanent, long-term solution, whole house console humidifiers and furnace humidifiers might be a good option for you:

                                                                                          Whole House Console Humidifiers
Similar to smaller, more affordable humidifiers commonly found in stores, but these take up much more space, have large capacity water tanks, and effectively humidify very large areas. They also tend to require minimal maintenance which helps make up for their higher purchase price. Because of their size and the amount of noise their powerful fans can produce, carefully consider where you’d install the unit.

                                                                                          Furnace Humidifiers
These units are used to add humidity to your entire house in conjunction with your existing furnace system. These humidifiers are mainly evaporative-bypass units which work by blowing air over a wet wick and distributing the air using your furnace. These units tend to be quiet and require very little maintenance while offering the convenience of serving the entire house using an existing system. However, they usually require professional installation and can be quite pricey to purchase.

                                                                                          Extra Features

                                                                                          Water Tank Size/Ease of Refill
These variables might seem insignificant, but they’ll determine how long you can go in between refills. A humidifier can become a hassle if the tank isn't large enough to last through the night.

                                                                                          Timer
A good feature to have, although the most important thing is intuitive controls and ease of use.

                                                                                          Power Consumption

With smaller units intended for occasional use, a humidifiers power consumption isn't usually too big of a concern. However, regular users might find energy costs can add up over time.

                                                                                          Safety Features

Safety is important, especially with warm mist humidifiers. Look for models with auto shut-off for added security, and avoid having to constantly check if the unit has enough water. Features such as UV technology help keep the water tank germ-free but regular tank cleaning is important to prevent build up of potentially harmful bacteria.

The Peg that was on the bottom of the unit was to short. I had to modify it, and make it longer so that it would engage the cap to allow the water to flow out of the containers on each side. It has worked to several years. About a year or so ago I had to order a new cap as it broke. You sent me a new one. Now the other cap has broken and I need another cap. Please ship me a new one asap. Please e-mail me as to cost or if it will be free of charge. Thank you. We really like the unit and use it every winter here in Wausau, Wisconsin.

You will need to contact the manufacturer to receive the part you are looking for. I wish I could be of further assistance.
