Best Iconic American Muscle Cars
You have to go back to 1970 when at least three muscle cars were being sold at the same time, models which were also sometimes known as “pony cars.” The Ford Mustang, Pontiac Firebird, Chevy Camaro, AMC Javelin, Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Barracuda were among the cars that qualified for those honors back then, compact or intermediate sized coupes with out-sized engines, fastback body styles along with special tires and wheels, striping and other race car type markings.
Only the Ford Mustang has managed to remain in production down through the years, being consistently built since released as a 1964½ model. Today, the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger are back, giving enthusiasts plenty to talk about and a chance to assert their bragging rights on roads far from the all-seeing eyes of “Smokey.”
All three models give a nod to their earlier body styles with the Dodge Challenger probably being closest to its origin's styling cues. Whereas in the past all models had weak steering and even worse suspensions, today's muscle cars incorporate most of the technological marvels of our day. And, V6 engines are offered alongside V8 motors, giving customers fuel efficient options to their beefy V8s.
One final note – Mustang, Camaro and Challenger owners are among the most loyal car owners known. My choice of best muscle car will please one group and anger the rest. But, diehard buyers won't care because their loyalty trumps all including one opinion offered by an expert.

Why it's a best pick:

Why it's a best pick:
I love the looks of the Challenger, the third place finisher, finding it remarkable that Chrysler engineers managed to create such a beautiful masterpiece. If I had to buy one of the three based solely on looks, I'd go with the Challenger with its HEMI orange color and black...
