Best LCD TV

October 20, 2011
LCD HDTVs have come a long way in the past few years, with improved performance all around. Even a current entry-level model offers outstanding picture quality, leaving out convenience features to preserve a lower price. Compared to plasma TVs, LCD HDTVs deliver superior energy efficiency, less bulkiness, and many more choices in terms of size. LCD TVs operate by shining light through filters and liquid crystal layers. The basic principles have remained unchanged, but manufacturers have switched out the CCFL backlights in favor of LEDs. These days, all 'high-end' LCD TVs are equipped with LED backlights, leaving the entry-level models as the only options that continue to use this 'old technology'.... Read More

All of the TVs recommended here have traditional CCFL backlight arrangements, and are not necessarily the best TVs on sale today. We've ranked the best LED LCD TV models separately. Minimize

Why it's best: The LG 55LK520 is one of the largest CCFL-backlit LCD TVs on sale today. The LK520 series is an excellent choice for value shoppers not interested in the latest and greatest. This LCD TV offers excellent picture quality and can handle 24p content natively.... Read Full Review

Why it's a best pick: The LN46D630 is Samsung's best CCFL-lit LCD HDTV offering of 2011. This 46-inch model 1080p resolution and 120Hz refresh rate much like the LG LK520, but the slightly higher price (for comparable screen sizes) may turn away some buyers looking for the best value. Picture quality is largely similar between the two, so the choice comes down to brand preference.... Read Full Review

Why it's a best pick: Panasonic is better known for making plasma TVs, but the company puts out respectable LCD TV offerings that offer genuine performance advantages over the competition. The Viera TC-L42U30 comes with a 42-inch screen size, 1080p resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and Panasonic's excellent IPS panel that allows wide viewing angles.... Read Full Review

Why it's a best pick: Sony's CCFL-backlit BX420 is an outstanding value, delivering noticeably superior picture quality than the competition despite coming up short on paper. This is the least-expensive 1080p TV that Sony currently offers, and the barren feature list may give some buyers a cause for concern. Even with its 60Hz refresh rate and lack of inputs, the Bravia KDL-40BX420 is a solid option.

Why it's a best pick: If space is a concern, the Samsung LN32D550 offers plenty of features and performance in a smaller package. This 32-inch CCFL-lit LCD TV shows surprisingly good picture quality, and can be connected to your network using Samsung's USB WiFi adapter. Best of all, the highly affordable price helps the LN32D550 fit into anyone's budget.... Read Full Review

I Appreciate your recommendation It means a lot. I also was
looking at the LG 47LV4400. What do you think about that one I haven't seen to many expert reviews on that model.

Thank you for your advice and comments.

I am looking between the Samsung LN46D630 and the LG 47LK520 which one has the best picture quality with less
graininess and also best sound. According to your review it looks like the Samsung has the edge but I will like to hear your thoughts. Thanks

Since most modern HDTVs generally have poor sound quality (especially as manufacturers aim to make the designs as sleek/slim as possible and introduce "hidden" speakers), we tend not to use sound quality in our evaluations.

In terms of picture quality, the LND630 has better black levels, while the LK520 has slightly more accurate colors. I'd give the D630 the edge, though both sets are very good for the price.

Hi! i'm truly ignorant of modern technology. i need to make a decision soon between purchasing a Sony SKU-KDL40EX500 or LG42LK520. they are about the same price. i think lg has a better sound from what i've read. my parents are hooked on Sony, but most of the people where i'm dealing have LG. i get a one year warranty with each and i can buy the extended warranted for an add. 4 years at $190.00. which, in turn, made me think, which brand might have a longer life. i wonder if you'll get this. thanks. sylvia p.s. $729.00 for the LG and $759 for the Sony, excluding extended warranty. i think i can get it for less at best buy, but this store is local, and i don't want total strangers in my house.

I sent a question. did you get it? thanks. sylvia

i think LG's LED TV is the best LCD because it's having IPS panel which is more bright, stable, no color distortion, fast response etc

Best 26" with DVD and Ear Phone Jack capability

Iam looking to buy an hdtv and I am overwhelmed with all the research. I keep going back to the Vizio 47"xvt472sv 240hz 1080p SPS TruLED HDTV and the Sharp Aquos 46" LC46LE620ut 1080p 120 hx led lcd also catch my eye. Are either of these a good purchase?

Hi Sassy,

The Vizio XVT472SV is an older model that's not widely available anymore, so I would not recommend it. However, the newer Vizio XVT473SV (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003GDHI0I?ie=UTF8&tag=bestcoverycom-20...) is an excellent TV that I'd highly recommend for the price. We reviewed the 55" version here: http://www.bestcovery.com/vizio-xvt553sv-55-lcd-tv.

Thanks,

Jeff

thanks Jeff

How current are these reviews, and prices?

I truely believe, from first hand experience, that the Samsung LN40B630 is by far the BEST LCD out for value, reliability, and features. The picture is breathtaking. Sports programming, movies, news, are all phenomonal to view. Sears and Best Buy had them on sale for $999.99 this past week, but if you used your Sears card, you saved 10% at Sears. So, I purchased the greatest LCD High Definition Television at Sears for $899.99. Now, no one can beat that!

My father bought me a samsung TV and I think its great the picture quality is superb with great speackers as well...

Cheers

I cannot believe this that world top 5 tv are from samsung? Is it true?

Thanks and Regards

I'm looking for a 32" Sony Bravia!

I can easy find a this LCD at a cheaper price! It is around $30-35 expensive. No offence though!

Cheers!

I am looking for test results on the Samsung 8500 and LG90 55" and 46/47" to see if they have closed the gap between LED and Plasma.

thank you

Not very good at reproducing blackest blacks.

have you considered the sharp aquos ?? i guess not...i have aquos and i think it is much better than the samsung and sony in your list.
