Best Flash Drive Overall

Article Contents

Flash drives come in all shapes and sizes. Ranging in capacity from just 1GB to more than 256GB, your flash drive can be just enough to carry the files you need to a meeting, your entire music and movie collection and more.

Depending on your needs and your lifestyle, flash drives can be suited for the USB 2.0 standard at lower prices, or the new, blazing fast USB 3.0 standard to move your files faster than ever. They can also be designed for those who need top notch security for peace of mind with their files, or developed with the most rugged designs to survive wherever you and your flash drive may trek.

All in all, there are all flavors of flash drives, and depending on your needs, you may need a bare-bones one for a few dollars, or the most secure and rugged ones that cost hundreds of dollars. It all depends on your mobile storage needs.

Best Flash Drive Overall:

When you’re looking for the best overall flash drive, what you really want to find is the ideal balance of features. Too often you’ll encounter niche models which sacrifice performance in one area for focus on a particular feature. For example, you might find the fastest drive on the market is only available in a few sizes or that the largest drive is so expensive it would be easier to buy a full external hard drive and figure out how to transport it. Ultimately, as you look for the best overall model, consider each element and feature and find a pick meeting all your needs without sacrificing any vital elements.

These are the best flash drives overall because they provide excellent performance thanks to USB 3.0 connectivity offering maximum read/write speeds of at least 135 MB/s and 40 MB/s. You also get excellent overall storage sizes and flexibility with these drives since all of them offer at least three different sizes with maximum storage of at least 64GB, though most go well beyond that. All of these flash drives offer plug-and-play functionality and they work with PCs and Macs without the need for any driver installation, so they are great overall choices for just about any setup.

            Best Performance Flash Drive:

When choosing a high-performance flash drive, you should look for the fastest read/write speeds possible. Storage size should also be a consideration, but that will vary depending on how much data you plan on keeping on the drive at any given time. There are models out there that are more secure or durable, but these ones are designed to run fast and remain reliable over long periods of time. Keep in mind that some performance flash drives are niche models really designed for the best speed possible, which means they can be rather expensive.

These are the best performance flash drives thanks to their USB 3.0 interfaces and read/write speeds of at least 230 MB/s and 160 MB/s respectively. While speed might be your primary concern, it’s also worthwhile to consider the storage sizes available for each model, especially since some of them have different data rates at different sizes. All of these models also have a minimum of three different storage sizes available to meet your needs.

SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive

This flash drive runs very fast, with read/write speeds up to 245 MB/s and 190 MB/s, making this a winner. There are three different storage sizes available, though the smaller ones have lower write speeds, but all of them use USB 3.0 connections. You even get software password protection on this flash drive to help keep your data secure. Read Full Review

                      Best Secure Flash Drive:

Since flash drives are commonly used as portable storage devices, it’s very important whatever data stored on it is suitably protected. For every day personal use, high levels of security might not be entirely necessary. But, if you’re using a Flash drive to store sensitive information or important business records, then you probably want to choose one which will keep your information safe. Secure flash drives offer all the portability and features of any other drive, but use encryption and other methods to prevent unauthorized access to your data. While security might be your primary concern, you should also look for a drive with great speed and storage size options.

These secure Flash drives have the best safety features due to high levels of encryption, options for password protection, and all of them are FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certified. These are fairly rugged devices, with dust and water resistance as well as rugged cases to withstand shocks while keeping your data intact. You’ll also want to consider the speeds of these drives as all of them use USB 2.0 or 3.0 connectivity for fast data transfer rates. We’re featuring the largest versions of these drives on this list but each one does offer at least four storage size options, so consider just how much memory you need. Despite their high level of security features, all of these models are platform independent and work with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.

There’s a lot to like about this secure flash drive, but it’s just not quite as good overall as the IronKey Enterprise S1000 from Imation. The USB 3.0 connectivity runs nice and fast plus it locks down and reformats itself after ten failed attempts to access data on it, though the maximum storage size available is a bit small. Best Rugged Flash Drive:

While there are dozens (if not hundreds) of different flash drives on the market, many of them are made from cheap plastic and easily damaged. A rugged flash drive gives you portable, fast, and durable data storage that you can easily swap between different systems. As you look at different models on the market, consider just what’s meant by “rugged” as a wide range of flash drives are available which can handle drops and shocks of different degrees. Most of these are waterproof to a certain degree so consider the max depth it can go compared to how you plan to use the drive.

We’ve chosen these rugged flash drives because they’ve been manufactured with durable designs that can handle a drop of 10 meters. These are also waterproof models which can endure being fully submerged in at least a one meter of water for up to 20 minutes and still function properly afterward. All of these models integrate USB 3.0 technology for the fastest data transfer rates possible and at least two different storage sizes available, though the largest option for each model has been chosen below.

There are three different storage sizes available and it can withstand a 10-meter drop. Read Full Review
