One good way to save dollars when grocery shopping is to buy in bulk. Sure, you'll also need a big freezer too, but buying in bulk means freezing what you aren't going to use straight away. The downside to this is something called freezer burn. Food stored for long periods of time will oxidize and dehydrate if not stored in an air-tight environment leading to spoiled, inedible food. You could lose a lot of stored food due to freezer burn, which would then make buying in bulk not very cost effective. This is where a high quality vacuum sealer comes in handy.
A vacuum sealer suctions all the air and moisture out of the food storage pouch or, in some cases, canning jars. Once the air is gone, the container opening is then sealed shut. This prevents the food from being wasted and stores it neatly and effectively for later use, for years in some cases.
Most vacuum sealers come with their own dedicated bags from the manufacturer, designed for use with their own specific machines. In many cases, these are single use bags, but some of the more versatile types can be recycled multiple times amd come on a roll so you can seal them when and where needed. Once these types are cut to open, you can easily reuse the bag, if you so choose.
Each of these best vacuum food sealers we've chosen will feature strong suction to draw out trapped air and guarantee and airtight seal; remember, air is the enemy here and inferior sealers just won't get all of the air out. You don't want to seal a couple of salmon filets in November, and by next August, when you are ready to grill them, the seal has been compromised and the fish is ruined.
Also, each sealer has been manufactured by a reputable company which isn't going anywhere which may be the most important selection criteria. This is because many bags are made for use with specific sealers. If you're dealing with a fly-by-night company doing business week to week, their bags may soon be discontinued, leaving you stuck with a great sealing unit, but you'll have no bags to use with it! Additionally, every sealer will have a minimum of a limited one year warranty (unless otherwise stated) and they'll all come with a starter kit of bags or a roll to get you started.

The Seal-a-Meal FSSMSL0160-000 Vacuum Seale is the unit that started the vacuum sealing craze, and it works just as good today as when it was invented a couple of decades ago. This option isn't as heavy duty as some of our other picks and would therefore be best for sealing smaller items. However, this will perform its job well as simplicity is its virtue. Just place the bag beneath the sealer, press down on the cover, and when the air is removed, you press a "seal" button that heat seals the bag.

That makes the sealed bags reusable, and that gives you more value for your money. With this unit, there have always been concerns about sealing the edges (particularly when you are using larger bags) so keep that in mind. But if you are just getting into vacuum sealing, or simply want to seal up smaller portions of food for everyday living, this might be a sound choice for you.
