Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K

Expert Review

The value is too good with the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K to leave it off the list. The detail created by its Super 35mm sensor is unbelievable, almost uncanny and it shoots 4K RAW (Technically Ultra HD since it’s not truly 4K in terms of pixels) in a CinemaDNG codec, an open format RAW codec allowing for an easier transition to editing software.

The files record directly to Solid State Drives (SSDs) enabling fast recording, eliminating buffering or major compression. It also records ProRes 422 (HQ) if you don’t need or want to shoot RAW. 12 stops of dynamic range and a global shutter records whole images at once (Instead of actively scanning lines) are a huge boost to its already impressive specs (However noise is evident even at some of the lower ISOs.) Blackmagic even throws in a full version of their industry standard color correction software DaVinci Resolve (A $995 value) allowing you to color grade your footage and output it at resolutions up to 4K.

While this cameras image doesn’t appeal to me and it seems made for a heavy post-production process, at just under $3,000 it’s a worth a look to interested parties.Rating: 4.25/5
