Why it's best:
Weighing 3.6 pounds and measuring 9.9- by 14.6- by 1.6-inches, the Canon CanoScan LiDE 200 is both small and light enough to qualify as portable. Even better, it gets power over its USB connection, so it doesn't need a separate power cable. However, you have to remember to lock the scan mechanism to protect it from harm when you move the scanner, which is one indication that it wasn't really designed as a portable.
The LiDE 200 offers a letter-size flatbed and a 4800 pixel per inch (ppi) optical resolution -- which is way more than you need for documents or even photos. One feature of particular interest if you're going to scan books -- the most likely reason you want a flatbed scanner at college in the first place -- is gutter shadow correction. Because books don't lie flat, you typically wind up with a shadow on the inside gutter of each page. The gutter shadow correction feature eliminates that shadow.
Unfortunately, you don't get much software with the LiDE 200 -- just a photo editor and Canon's own scan utility. So when you consider price, be sure to add in the cost of any additional software you'll need to buy. Likely choices for college needs include a document management program and an optical character recognition (OCR) program. Keep in mind that you can find both features in one program, however, since many document management programs also include OCR capability.
