Canon XA25 Professional Camcorder
The XA25 might not suffice to shoot major motion pictures but for a camera not much bigger than a shoe, it’s quite impressive. Cameras like the XA25 are typically used for run-and-gun news operations or behind-the-scenes footage and this unit functions well in such conditions. The downside for news shooting is it doesn’t have the 4:2:2 50Mbps standard necessary for broadcast but has a 20x optical zoom which still provides sharp images. There’s also an autofocus function which works very well if you don’t want to use the manual focus ring at the front of the camera.
Like other Canon handycams, the LCD display is touch screen meaning you’ll sift through a lot of menus, as the XA25 doesn’t have a ton of hard function buttons. It does have a detachable top handle with XLR inputs giving you the option of using other professional microphones. This camera shoots true slow motion at 1080/60p for fantastic slow motion shots. Overall, this is an impressive little camera which should work well for those looking for a prosumer camera in this price range.
