Denon AVR-S500BT 5.2-Channel Network Receiver
Denon's AVR-S500BT is the lowest-priced model of their 2014 S-Series lineup. At about $250, it is to be expected that some features will be sacrificed in order to achieve such a low price. However, the AVR-S500BT is an excellent choice for those who want a basic 5.2-channel receiver without the added cost or complication of all the bells & whistles. Power output is strong at 140 watts per channel while the 5.2-channel configuration means the option of adding a second subwoofer.
Setup is easy thanks to Denon's Setup Assistant, although the automatic speaker calibration feature does not use Audyssey like in the more expensive models. One of the highlights of the AVR-S500BT is the addition of HDMI 2.0 for its five HDMI inputs, which means the receiver can support 4K/60Hz. A single HDMI output is also included, as well as a front-panel USB port. Connectivity is otherwise quite sparse, with no component video, and only Bluetooth for wireless options. If connectivity and features are not a priority for you, this affordable 5.2-channel receiver is an excellent choice.
