Expert Review

With the Excelon DNN990HD, Kenwood takes a step forward in terms of bringing car stereo and navigation devices up to speed with modern technologies. Beyond just smartphone integration, the Excelon DNN990HD has a built-in WiFi adapter that opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for this type of device. Beyond simply working with hotspots such as those your smartphone can create, you can set up an account with Kenwood to take advantage of the full range of features and cloud-based services. The WiFi features require a subscription after an initial 2 year period, but include the ability to stream YouTube, iHeartRadio, access your email and social media accounts, use a web browser, and much more directly from your car. Alongside this is the expected smartphone connectivity including options such as Pandora internet radio control, although a separate cable is needed for the iPhone (whereas Android and Blackberry use Bluetooth). Of course, built-in Bluetooth offers handsfree talking as well as audio streaming, and the built-in HD Radio tuner delivers high quality radio to your car. A 24-bit digital-to-analog converter and the 22 watt RMS x 4 built-in amplifier take care of sound quality from all sources. The large, motorized 6.95" touchscreen can display DVD movies when parked, and everything else - including navigation - while driving. The built-in navigation is done by Garmin, and includes Insta-Route and Insta-Search, making it familiar, reliable, and easy to use. Included are maps of the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico, while INRIX traffic gives you updates beyond just traffic (weather, fuel prices, etc) when connected to the internet. When not connected, free lifetime NAVTEQ traffic updates keep you from running unknowingly into traffic jams. In terms of expandability, the Excelon DNN990HD has 2 rear USB inputs, 2 A/V inputs, 2 camera inputs, an A/V output, and 6-channel, 5-volt preamp outputs. With too many features to list, Kenwood's Excelon DNN990HD is an excellent choice for those who are willing to pay a premium for a device that really can do pretty much everything.Rating: 4.25/5
