LawnBott Spyder LB1200 Robotic Lawn Mower
Why it's best:
To use this mower you just unpack it, charge it, put it on your lawn and go. It works by having six moisture-sensitive sensors that tell the mower to reverse direction when it comes across anything that's not living grass. So if it finds a foot or so of dirt, mulch, rocks, or concrete it turns back. It also reverses direction when it contacts an obstacle or a sudden steep change of terrain angle. You do need to make sure the lawn areas you want it to cut are bordered by a fence or some material other than grass so it doesn't wander into your neighbor's yard.
It's compact, and has just one battery, so it can mow only smaller yards 5,500 square feet or less. Like other LawnBotts, it handles slopes up to 27 degrees. It has four-wheel drive to work on bumpy terrain, and runs for up to 5 hours on a charge. It doesn't automatically go to its recharger when finished like its siblings, so you have to pick it up when it's done, and push a button to start it the next time you want to mow. But it's also weather-proof, so it can stand being out in the rain. It's very quiet, and has built-in safety features and upgradeable firmware.
It's not perfect. It can get confused by narrow curbs, and its sensors can reject dead or overly dry grass. And it's not cheap. But it's very stylish (it's based on an Italian version) and is a no-brainer if your lawn meets its specs and you want the ultimate in non-fuss mowing.
