Linksys WRT54GL Wireless Router
The Linksys WRT54GL is a massively popular and extremely capable router that's essentially a WRT54G with additional onboard memory for third-party modifications. The WRT54GL is fundamentally similar to the early versions of the WRT54G; since then, Linksys has made the newer WRT54Gs without as much memory, severely hampering modification efforts. The WRT54GL is still sold new (at well below $50), which is surprising given its age. The stock router offers relatively unremarkable performance, but where this router truly shines is in the ease of modification that it offers. This router has many popular third party, open-source firmwares such as DD-WRT or Tomato that work to enhance the capabilities of the router. With the ability to be modified in order to perform very specific tasks such as wireless bridging or repeating, the WRT54GL has developed quite the online community of support and modification. The router itself has won many community satisfaction awards every year without fail, and Linksys is smart in not modifying such a tried and true router.
