Music Hall USB-1 Turntable
Music Hall's entry-level turntable is definitely a notch above your typical budget table, and reflects the fact that Music Hall has an audiophile focus. This is a two-speed (33 1/3 and 45 RPM) manual turntable with a fine pitch adjustment (+/- 10 percent) and respectable wow and flutter specs (less than 0.25 percent). The overall look is similar to the classic Technics 1200 DJ table, as is the S-tonearm with detachable headshell. The included cartridge is anAudio Technica AT3600. This is an adequate cartridge, but upgrading to a better cartridge with an elliptical stylus will make a big difference in the sound as is recommended.
The USB outputs make this turntable ready for digitizing duty with the included Audacity software. The built-in phono preamp can be switched off if your receiver already has one built in. And in a nod to Music Hall's audiophile reputation, the RCA cables are not hard wired in so you can upgrade your interconnects without needing to get out the soldering iron.
One thing to note about the USB-1 is that this is a very light turntable and it does not feel as solid as some other choices on the list. You might have more issues with vibrations from footfalls affecting noise and tracking so be thinking about this if you have a house full of running kids or dogs.
