Onkyo TX-NR535 5.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver
Onkyo's TX-NR535 is technically a lower-midrange receiver, offering an interesting mix of features and performance. The TX-NR535 has a 5.2-channel configuration allowing for hooking up a second subwoofer and adding more bass. Power output has come up a bit from last year's model, now at 90 watts per channel (this is enough juice for most uses).
A major upgrade for 2014 is the inclusion of HDMI 2.0, which allows for 4K/60Hz video. While there just isn't the content yet available to fully take advantage of this, it's nice to see that you can buy a receiver with "future proofing" at such an affordable price. All six HDMI inputs are 2.0, and there is a single HDMI output. Analog connectivity includes 1 component video input, and 4 composite video inputs, as well as 2 coaxial inputs and one optical digital audio input.
Wireless connectivity is solid, with built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and plenty of preloaded internet streaming capability but AirPlay is not included. Although the TX-NR535 lacks upscaling as well, its clean design, relative ease-of-use, and excellent balance of features and performance for around $400 make it an excellent affordable choice.
