Samsung CLP-315 Laser Printer
Why it's a best pick:
The Samsung CLP-315 may be the smallest color laser on the planet. With its 15.3 by 12.3-inch footprint, it will take up minimal desktop real estate -- less than most ink jets -- and it stands only 9.6 inches high. One reason for the low height however, is that the paper tray can hold only 150-sheets. That's less than ideal, but should easily be enough for the amount you'll print at college, so adding paper won't turn into an annoying chore.
Don't expect blazingly fast speed from the CLP-315. However, it's faster than any ink jet you're probably used to. Because claimed speeds for lasers are close to the actual maximum speed, you'll see something close to the rated 17 pages per minute (ppm) for printing monochrome text, but the printer slows down to 4 ppm for color.
The CLP-315 ships with starter cartridges with claimed yields of only 1000 pages for black and 700 pages for each of the three color cartridges. For the standard cartridges you'll buy later, however, Samsung claims a 1,500-page yield for black and a 1,000-page yield for each of the color cartridges. The claimed cost is 3 cents per monochrome page and 15 cents per color page.

(homework not so good on that respect) After spending a considerable amount of time with HP support I was notified that there was no driver compat...read full review
Fast, Quiet, Quality, Inexpensive (I don't want to say cheap that can be confused), June 22 2008

I was dismayed that while the printer had been out for near a month (supposedly) no one had reviewed it on any website I could find (tech saavy website or purchasing website such as this). So I decided that even though reviews aren't...read full review
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, December 03 2008
I bought this printer on an amazing Black Friday $99 deal thinking that it would be more economical than my inkjet for printing out the 360 pages I needed for my family's holiday newsletter. It was an unfortunate mix of good and bad...
