Why it's best:
The Samsung UN55B8500 doesn’t come cheap, but it is the best performing LCD TV on the current market and one of the best performing HDTVs ever made. This incredibly slim, stylish LCD TV uses LED backlighting with local-dimming technology to deliver unparalleled black levels and extremely accurate, highly saturated color. There are some flaws in terms of off-angle viewing and screen uniformity, but these won’t detract from the viewing experience if you are sitting in front of the TV.

The physical design of the unit is gorgeous as well – the UNB8500 series is much thinner than most local dimming LED TVs, at just 1.6 inches deep. It is set in a glossy black frame, with a strong brushed metal swiveling stand. Being LED backlit, the unit also runs much cooler than its competitors, and weighs considerably less as well. There are four HDMI inputs, and two USB ports, as well as a component-video connection (allows composite input as well), optical audio jack, and a LAN, Cable, and DVI input.

The UN55B8500 comes with two remotes – the first is a full featured RF remote, which you sync with the TV on first run, allowing you to control the unit without line of sight view. The buttons are backlit, and have many dedicated keys to avoid navigating too many menus. The second remote is a very simple little hockey puck-style remote that only controls channel, volume and power; although not necessary, this can be useful for letting the kids watch TV, or letting guests who are unfamiliar with your setup perform the basic functions.

Other features include Yahoo Widgets, which brings many interactive capabilities to your TV. There are widgets for stocks, weather, news, Facebook, Flickr photos, YouTube, games, Twitter, and more. This HDTV has a network connection and USB ports which can be used for streaming media, and the Ethernet port can also be used to upgrade the TV’s firmware.

Overall, the Samsung UN55B8500 is a feature packed, performance driven powerhouse, leaving almost nothing to be desired in the visual department, and more than enough bells and whistles. There are plenty of connections to allow you to enjoy all of your devices on the beautiful display, and a quality build that is sure to impress.

Manufacturer Description: The Samsung 8500 Series delivers great picture quality and design. Measuring at just 1.6 inches deep, the 7,000,000:1 Mega Contrast and Touch of Color feature provides an incredible range of brightness - from pure blacks to pristine whites. Additionally, the 240Hz technology analyzes and adjusts every frame so that nothing goes by in a blur. The TV also has more abundant...read full description

Recieved 5 StarsBest LCD tv available today!, October 12, 2009

To clarify I own this tv and am not just basing this review on time spent in a store browsing. This tv has been hard to come by and the only place I could find that had it in stock was my local Best Buy with a Magnolia section.

Design: Samsung is noted for their sleek design and this tv is no exception. Samsung says it has a...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsThe one I've been waiting for, October 17, 2009

I have to echo Bearcat's rating as he is very thorough and accurate, but I want to throw my 2 cents in. When coupled with Samsung's own super-slim wall mount, which is just a glorified cable hanging on two sturdy disks, the TV sits amazingly close to the wall. Another neat feature that I found hard to believe--When watching movies from an...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsFinally an LCD competes with the best Plasmas, November 13, 2009

The UN55b8500 is Samsung's current flagship model and is the successor to the LN55A950.

Picture Quality
A full LED backlit LCD offering a stunning 7 million:1 contrast seperates the B8500 from other LCDs by reaching deep into pitch black, formely only possible with plasmas. Some LCDs turn off pixels to achieve inky blacks -...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsFantastic Set, November 17, 2009

I believe in concise reviews so I'll keep mine short and sweet. I would consider myself a typical home buyer. I am by no means an expert in TV technology.

Pros:

* What a picture!
* Slim
* Light
* Games look great (I use XBOX 360 w/ HDMI - Halo 3 and now Modern Warfare 2 w/ game mode on)
*...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsBest LED LCD to Date, October 23, 2009

I am a proud owner of this bad boy and I am so glad I waited 3 years to buy a new TV. I have watched Planet Earth on Blu-Ray and it looks georgeous. Playing video games looks really great too, Uncharted 2 looked amazing on this set. I still have yet to find the best settings for picture quality but the one I got from Cnet works just fine. I highly ...read full review
