Why it's a best pick:
This particular HDTV is a part of Sony’s much-lauded Bravia line of high-definition televisions, and the higher price tag of around $3800 for the KDL-55XBR8 reflects just how high-end this HDTV actually is, mostly when compared with the other LED TV’s on this list.

However, this HDTV delivers on quite a few different features that the other LED TV’s on this list do not have, particularly it’s amazing array of LED backlighting, which consists of red, green and blue LED lights which Sony has named “Triluminous”.

This new LED technology actually allows for added brightening elements in the content of one scene in a movie or TV show wherein an object in the foreground such as the moon in a night scene, can be brightened substantially and the trees in the background can be naturally dimmed in a way that seems both realistic and organic at the same time.

When you throw in the fact that the KDL-55XBR8 also contains two USB ports, HDMI 1.3, rate frames of 120 per second and a huge 55” 1080p full HD wide-screen, you are actually getting a lot of high-end technology for your hard-earned cash.

Manufacturer Description: Sony's Bravia XBR8 Series has images that appear to jump off the screen. The XBR8 Series features TRILUMINOS RGB Dynamic LED Backlight technology to deliver more accurate color reproduction and higher purity of colors. Combined with local dimming technology, you'll notice brighter whites and deeper blacks with astonishing depth and extraordinary shadow detail.

Recieved 5 StarsBreathtaking., November 21, 2008

I actually own one. It is hard to imagine how a picture on a TV based on the current ATSC encoding could look any better. The blacks are "black-black". The colors are intense. The picture is bright. The only limitation I can see has more to do with the source material than with the TV itself.

I have DirectTV HD and Sony blu-ray,...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsAmazing TV - maybe too good!, January 14, 2009

This television is fantastic - only problem is ....it's too good! It reveals all of the garbage signals that the hd providers are outputting! The various compression techniques, the huge breakups and distortions, out of focus imagery - All is revealed in larger than life quality on this monitor! But, that's why I got it. This TV is directly...read full review

Recieved 5 Starsxbr8 review, August 26, 2009

We now have one (1) 55inch xbr8 and two (2) 46inch xbr8s in the house. The 55 is in the living-room with all the audio equipment. One of the 46 sets is in the den and the other in the master bedroom. We have studied hundreds of other sets over the years. The Sony xbr8 technology makes the others look like they are from "Toys Are Us". The...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsWorth Every Penny!!!, July 22, 2009

I've been waiting for the price to drop on this TV for several months. It finally came down to a point where I figure the next change will be the model being discontinued.

At $4,500, it ain't cheap, considering that you can get 120MHz 1080p large screens for not much more than $1,000 these days. Samsung is coming out with a 65" LCD...read full review
