Why it's best:
With its more affordable $299 price tag, the redesigned Sony PlayStation 3 120GB (PS3 Slim) remains the top overall choice for buyers shopping for a new Blu-ray player. The system still outperforms many competing Blu-ray players and doubles as an outstanding game console with a growing library of great games. It supports Profile 2.0 Blu-ray discs and its firmware is easily upgradable via Wi-Fi. The recent addition of Netflix streaming, which provides instant access to thousands of movies and TV shows, keeps the PS3 competitive with other fully-featured players such as the LG BD390 and Samsung BD-P3600. The PS3 also does a great job upconverting standard DVDs, ensuring that your old movies will look great too. The biggest drawback is the lack of IR support, which means you won’t be able to use a standard universal remote without buying an external accessory. The PS3 also lacks analog multichannel outputs, but all modern AV receivers are equipped with HDMI inputs, so this shouldn’t be an issue for most buyers. Combining excellent audio and video quality, great performance, networking capabilities and Netflix instant streaming, the PS3 is the best bang-for-the-buck Blu-ray player on the market and a no-brainer for anyone even remotely interested in gaming.

Manufacturer Description: With the PlayStation 3 120GB system, you get free PlayStation Network membership, built-in Wi-Fi and 120GB of hard disk drive storage for games, music, videos and photos. And every PS3™ system comes with a built-in Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality and the best high-definition viewing experience available. Recieved 5 StarsThe PS3 Reloaded, August 25, 2009

RATING

I will begin with the rating part so that those who are already familiar with the PS3 line may save some time.

On balance, I found the PS3 Slim or the 'PS3 120GB' to be a worthy addition to the current PS3 line. It comes with several major improvements over its predecessors and the 'trade offs' are few and, to...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsFor me, a new experience!, October 25, 2009

Let me start out by saying that, I'm currently 56 years old and everything I know about video game consoles can fit on a fingernail clipping. A couple of years ago, my companion bought me a PS2, because she had recalled my mentioning in passing (after seeing advertisements for some pretty interesting sci-fi-themed games) that I was curious about...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsThe best just got better!, August 26, 2009

As a proud owner of a PS3, I was closely following developments of when the rumored (and highly-anticipated) PS3 Slim would come out. After shelling [...] for the PS3 80GB back in 2008, I was really excited to hear that Sony not only announced a smaller version of the PS3, but also implemented a [long-overdue] $100 price cut. I immediately went...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsBest System on the Market, August 27, 2009

I already owned a original 60GB model that had PS2 backward compatibility. I was planning on getting another BD player for my bedroom. I was considering the new Samsung players when this was announced. It's cheaper and it plays games plus it has a HDD. It was a no-brainer for me. The PlayStation 3 is far and away the best console or for that...read full review

Recieved 5 StarsGreat fun, even for an old fart, November 7, 2009

I was looking for a Blu Ray player and realized that if I paid just a little more, I'd also be able to play some excellent games. If you're looking for something that will play Blu Ray and Games, the purchase of a PS3 is truly a "no brainer" move. I now own the 360, Wii, and PS3. Each has its own qualities and drawbacks. What I really appreciate...read full review
