Review: To call this a camcorder, or even “prosumer,” is really to not do it justice. This is, for all intents and purposes, a professional, broadcast quality camera. And it’s been the industry workhorse for cameras under 10K for years. Harking from Sony’s CineAlta line, the EX-3 records in full 1920x1080 progressive HD resolution on 3 1/2” CMOS sensors, shoots 24P, has two XLR audio inputs and HD-SDI, can capture slow-motion up to 60p, and has an expansive array of in-camera image controls such as gamma and matrix that closely mirror it’s legendary older siblings, the F900, F23, and F35. It’s probably the only camera under $10K to warrant an on set Digital Image Technician, or DIT. What really sets this camera apart from the rest is it’s sharpness, resolution, and it’s low amount of noise, a huge problem on other smaller prosumer cameras. Even in low light, the EX-3 performs amazingly, producing crisp, sharp images. Ideal for documentaries, reality shows, or journalism, the EX-3 is also a great choice for shooting pro-grade films and music videos, making it one of the most well-rounded cameras available. What’s great is that it’s also upgradeable , allowing, for instance, of interchangeable lenses. Sony makes a wider lens specifically for the EX-3, but it can also use high end Fujinon and Canon ENG lenses too. The EX-3 records in XDCAM on Sony’s proprietary SxS memory cards, which are looking to be the industry standard in professional tapeless video recording. Unlike Panasonic’s P2 system, SxS is being adopted by other manufacturers, including JVC and motion picture camera powerhouse Arriflex, making it a solid investment in a world with rapidly advancing technology. And while it internally only records at up to 35 mbs VBR in 4:2:0 color space, it can be expanded and used in conjunction with a Nanoflash, via firewire, to get much higher bit rates and richer 4:2:2 color. Also, if you don’t ever anticipate ever having to swap out the lens (many people think they do but end up never doing it anyway) you can opt for the less expensive Sony EX-1, a practically identical camera that’s cheaper, smaller, and in some ways easier to operate than it’s larger sibling
