Best Tequila for Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is a popular party day for many Americans. Here's what we recommend for those who partake!

(Updated 5/4/2021) Cinco de Mayo is here once again! Despite how many of us may feel about 2020, we're all enjoying a new year with more things to look forward to. Here are some of our favorite Tequila picks for Cinco de Mayo!

We can debate at length about the origins of Cinco de Mayo, but the fact that it's become an entrenched holiday in our calendars can't be argued with. Tequila and guacamole are on the menu; here are our recommendations, with a bonus selection at the very end!

Don Julio

A popular choice among seasoned Tequila fans, Don Julio Blanco (or Silver) has long been considered one of the gold standards when it comes to selecting a versatile Tequila. It's great on its own whether neat or on the rocks, and also works as a great mixer for margaritas or any other cocktail. It's not the cheapest option around, but great Tequilas usually aren't.

Tres Generaciones Reposado Tequila

Some Tequilas make for fine sipping drinks, just like a good whiskey or brandy. Tres Generaciones Reposado fits the mold perfectly; while it's perfectly good for mixed drinks, it's best appreciated on its own where the subtle flavors are allowed to come out. It's priced at a premium in keeping in line with other quality Tequilas, but we feel that the added refinement is well worth the cost.

Patrón Silver Tequila

A bar/club/party mainstay, Patrón Silver Tequila is arguably one of the most recognizable brands in this space. This particular Tequila is renowned for its smooth taste and easy-going demeanor, but it can certainly hold its own when mixed into a cocktail. It's a premium drink at its core, though - Patrón is best enjoyed when it's being savored for all its flavors.

Bonus: Corona Extra

Did you know that Cinco de Mayo generates beer sales close to that of Super Bowl Weekend? Yes, the word "corona" doesn't carry very positive associations these days, but Corona Extra still remains one of the top beers in the US. Besides, Corona beer has been around for decades and has absolutely no relation to the coronavirus whatsoever - the name of the virus is derived from the Latin word "corona" meaning "crown" in English. It's a perfect counter to the warming weather in just about any part of the country, and is just as enjoyable on its own or paired with food.
